Below you can read more about the activities that we planned for your visit in Ghent.

We would like to know if there is anyone in the group with a dissabilty. On Tuesday morning there will be a small walking tour. Can you please comfirm? 

 

Sunday 14/08

Arrival of the Hongarian group in Ghent at Hotel Cathedral around 18h. We suggest you to visit ‘Patersholfeesten’, a celebration/cultural heritage festival of an ancient neighboorhoud in the historical centre of Ghent. Stroll around in the old historical centre while you enjoy musical performances, all in a cozy athmosphere. There are lots of possibilities of restaurants and cafes in this area. At midnight the people of Ghent will gather together for a night walk called ‘Kaarskensprocessie’, an old ritual where people do a walkingtour in group in the neighboorhoud with candles. Monday 15/08

  • In the morning Andrea will pick you up at 9.30h. We visit Huis van Alijn, https://huisvanalijn.be/nl. This was originally a guesthouse where people cared for older/sick people or people in poverty, but now a famous museum about the daily life of before (interiors, typical crafts, …) in Flanders.
  • In this museum you will meet my collegue Frea, who works mainly on traditions and advisiting organisations about cultural intangible heritage. She will give you an introduction about bobbin lace, an old craft typical for our regions.
  • Lunch with sandwiches
  • In the afternoon there are lots of possibilities to visit in Ghent. One of these things are: visiting the flea market of Patershol, the Industriemuseum, Sint-Baafs Cathedral with the worldfamous painting Lam Gods of Jan Van Eyck, …). Ghent is also a ‘city of water’, visiting Ghent on a guided boat tour is also an option.

 

Tuesday 16/08

  • 9.30h-12h: Andrea will pick you up at 9.30h. We do a small walking tour. At 10h we visit the old Begijnhof (Beguinage), a typical architectal complex which was build to house beguines, religious women who lived in a community. This beguinage in Ghent is on the World Heritage list of UNESCO. Beguines are only found in our regions. Our guide will be the chairman of the local documentational centre for local history. He will give you an introduction about the organisation, how they work with vollunteers and about the beguinages in our regions.   • Free lunch and afternoon/ time to pack and departure back.
